uPVC Door Lock Repair in Brixton

Brixton Locksmith repairs uPVC and composite door locks across SW2 and SW9, 24 hours a day. Multipoint mechanisms, gearboxes, handles and cylinders are fixed at your door, and doors that have dropped are realigned. Call or WhatsApp 07984 547185 for a clear quote.

uPVC doors lock differently from timber doors. Instead of one bolt, a multipoint mechanism throws hooks and rollers at several points along the frame when you lift the handle. It is a good system — until one part wears out and the whole door refuses to lock.

We repair these mechanisms every day across Brixton, from the mansion blocks off Brixton Hill to the conversions around Herne Hill. Most faults are fixed in one visit.

How does a multipoint lock work?

When you lift the handle, a central gearbox drives rods up and down the edge of the door, throwing hooks into keeps in the frame. Turning the key then deadlocks the whole mechanism. The handle, the gearbox, the rods and the keeps all have to work together.

When one part fails — a worn gearbox, a bent rod, a keep that has shifted — the handle will not lift fully, the key will not turn, or the door will not lock at all.

Common uPVC door faults

The most common fault is a handle that will not lift, which usually points to the gearbox. The second is a door that has dropped on its hinges, so the hooks no longer line up with the keeps. The third is a cylinder that spins or will not turn, which usually means the cylinder itself has failed.

Cold weather makes all of these worse. uPVC contracts in the cold, gaps change, and a door that locked fine in summer starts sticking in winter.

My uPVC door has dropped — what now?

A dropped door shows itself slowly: the handle gets stiff, the hooks miss the keeps, and the key starts needing a shove. The cause is usually worn hinges or a frame that has shifted, and the fix is a realignment — the hinges are adjusted and the keeps moved so the hooks line up again.

A realignment is a small job when it is caught early, and it is part of a lock repair visit. Left alone, a dropped door strains the gearbox until it breaks, and a broken gearbox costs far more than an adjustment. A second opinion costs nothing — the Master Locksmiths Association lists locksmiths by area if you want to compare.

Should I repair or replace my uPVC mechanism?

A single failed gearbox can usually be replaced on its own, which is far cheaper than a whole new locking strip. We carry common gearboxes on the van and can match most makes by sight. While the mechanism is open, an anti-snap cylinder is an easy upgrade — the old cylinder comes out anyway.

If the whole strip is worn — multiple hooks failing, rods bent, keeps damaged — a full mechanism replacement is the honest recommendation. We quote both options and let you choose. After a new mechanism is fitted, we can cut spare keys for the household during the same visit.

Multipoint lock types we repair

The multipoint mechanisms on Brixton doors mostly come from a handful of makers — Yale, Avocet, ERA, Fullex and Winkhaus are the names you will see on the strip. We repair the mechanism whatever the maker; we do not claim to stock any particular brand, and the part that fits is the one we order.

Cylinders are rated to TS007, and Sold Secure publishes independent attack-resistance ratings for locks. When a rating matters — for an insurer, or for a door that has already been attacked — tell us on the phone and we will fit a cylinder that meets it.

Keeping your uPVC door working

Two habits make a real difference. First, lift the handle fully every time you lock the door, so all the points engage and the mechanism is not left half-thrown. Second, keep the hinges and keeps clean and lightly lubricated with a graphite-based product.

If the door starts needing a lift or a shove to lock, call before it gets worse. A small realignment now is cheaper than a seized mechanism later.

Frequently asked questions

Why will my uPVC door not lock?

The usual causes are a worn gearbox, a door that has dropped on its hinges, or a cylinder that has failed. When the handle will not lift fully, the hooks cannot engage and the key cannot turn. We diagnose the fault in one visit and usually fix it there and then.

Can you repair a multipoint lock, or does the whole door need replacing?

The door almost never needs replacing. A failed gearbox or a worn part of the mechanism can usually be swapped on its own. Only when the whole strip is worn out do we recommend a full mechanism replacement, and even then the door itself stays in place.

How much does a uPVC lock repair cost?

It depends on the part that has failed. A gearbox replacement costs more than a realignment, and a full mechanism costs more than a gearbox. You get a clear quote for the visit on the phone, and we confirm the price of any part before fitting it.

My uPVC door handle is stiff. Is that serious?

A stiff handle usually means the mechanism is under strain, often because the door has dropped or the keeps have shifted. It is worth fixing early, because forcing a stiff handle can break the gearbox. We can realign the door and service the mechanism in one visit.

Do you carry uPVC lock parts on the van?

Yes. We carry the most common gearboxes, cylinders, handles and keeps, covering the makes found on most Brixton doors. If your mechanism is unusual, we can usually identify it from a photo sent over WhatsApp and bring the right part.
