Lost Keys in Brixton — Locksmith Help

Lost your keys in Brixton? Brixton Locksmith helps across SW2 and SW9, 24 hours a day. We get you back inside, then change the lock if the keys cannot be found, so only you hold a working key. Call or WhatsApp 07984 547185 for a clear quote.

Losing your keys is annoying. Losing them with no spare, late at night, is worse. We deal with lost keys every week — getting you back inside first, then making sure the lost set cannot be used against you.

The right response depends on where the keys were lost and what was with them. We talk it through with you on the phone before any work starts. If you are locked out right now, our emergency locksmith service is open 24 hours.

I have lost my keys — what do I do first?

If you are locked out, the first job is entry. We open the door without damage wherever possible, using picks and bypass tools. Drilling is a last resort, and only with your agreement.

If you are locked out right now, our step-by-step locked-out guide walks through what to do first and what not to try while you wait.

Once you are inside, we can check what keys remain. If you have a spare at home, a new copy can be cut straight away. If every key is gone, the next step is a lock change.

When the lost keys are a security risk

Keys lost on their own, with nothing to link them to your address, are a low risk. Keys lost with a wallet, a bag tag, or anything showing where you live are a real risk — whoever finds them knows where they fit.

Stolen keys are always a risk. Report the theft to the police and get a crime reference number, then change the lock as soon as possible, even if it is the middle of the night. We carry common locks on the van for exactly this situation.

What proof of ownership we ask for

We need to be sure the person asking has the right to be let in, so we ask for photo ID — a driving licence or a passport — and something that links you to the address: a tenancy agreement, a utility bill, a bank statement, or a neighbour or letting agent who can confirm who you are.

If you have just moved in and have little paperwork yet, tell us — we can work with what you have, and a neighbour who knows you is often enough. If we cannot satisfy ourselves that you belong at the address, we will not open the door, even if that means turning the job down.

The same applies to communal entrance doors. We do not open a building door for someone who cannot show they live there, and we will not open a flat for a landlord without the tenant's agreement. It protects everyone in the building, including you.

Should I change the lock after losing my keys?

A lock change after lost keys is quick: the old cylinder or mortice lock comes out and a new one goes in, with fresh keys for everyone in the household. It is usually done in a single visit.

This is also a good moment to upgrade. If the old lock was a basic cylinder, an anti-snap cylinder costs little more and is much harder to break. We can explain the options when we arrive.

Preventing the next lost-key panic

A spare key held by someone you trust — a family member, a close friend — turns a lost-key night into a minor inconvenience. A key safe by the front door works the same way, and fitting one is a quick job during a visit.

Avoid hiding a spare under the mat or in a plant pot. Those are the first places anyone looks, including people you would rather not have looking.

Frequently asked questions

I have lost all my keys. Can you still let me in?

Yes. We open doors without keys every day, using non-destructive methods wherever possible. We may ask you to show ID or proof that you live at the address. Once you are inside, we can change the lock and cut fresh keys so you are secure again.

Do I need a new lock if I lose my keys?

It depends on the risk. Keys lost somewhere anonymous are a low risk, but keys lost with anything showing your address, or keys that were stolen, mean the lock should be changed. We talk through the situation with you and give honest advice before you decide.

How much does it cost to change a lock after losing keys?

The price depends on the lock type and the time of day. A standard cylinder change costs less than a mortice lock on a timber door. You get a clear quote on the phone before any work starts, and the price agreed is the price you pay.

Can you cut new keys if I have no original left?

If every key is lost, the usual answer is a new lock with fresh keys, which we fit during the same visit. If the lock can be rekeyed instead, we explain that option too. Either way, you leave with working keys and only you hold them.

My keys were stolen. What should I do first?

Report the theft to the police and get a crime reference number, then call us. A stolen key is a security risk, so the lock should be changed as soon as possible. We are open 24 hours and carry common locks on the van for urgent changes.
